Each Temple Goddess Performance features a different Goddess. Tonight we are honoring Nyai Loro Kidul:
In Java, it is a belief that the right to rule was given to them by Nyai Loro Kidul, the mermaid Goddess of the South
Seas. One popular story says that the goddess married the king of Java in the sixteenth century, Before returning to the
sea, she taught the king how to gain power of the spirits so he could rule Java wisely. Since then all rulers of Java have
considered her their divine ancestress.
The goddess, aka Dewi Kadita is believed to have been the mortal daughter of a king of Java in ancient times. When her
mother died, her father remarried unwisely. The new stepmother was very jealous of her and with the aid of an evil wizard,
poisoned her stepdaughter's bath water so that her skin erupted in painful sores. The poor disfigured princess was banished
into the forests. She wandered there for a long time in deep sadness until she came to the south shore of the island.
She sat above a rock in a stove shape and when she was sleeping, she had a vision that she must jump into the water to
rid herself of the curse. When she woke up, with no second thought, Dewi Kadita jumped into the sea. She returned to a beautiful
woman as she was but then realized that she wasn't a human anymore. She was transformed into the radiant goddess Nyai Loro
Kidul.
The Javanese still honor Nyai Loro Kidul today. As a seductive mermaid queen, her powers reflect the mysterious, hidden
forces of the ocean--- forces that must be respected.
Local people know better then to swim in the waters of the south shore of Java, where the goddess is said to reside.
